Windows XP: Extra Documents and Settings Profiles after OS Reinstall
This problem is on a home computer with multiple family User Accounts. In the Documents and Settings folder there are two (2) entries for everyone’s account. As an example for me there is John and also a John.home2. Due to a bad virus problem last year I had to reinstall Windows XP and at that time I named the computer home2. The problem is that I can’t delete the original User Accounts and it appears that some of these are taking up some significant space such as in Gigabytes. I can tell that they are not being used from dates of the folder/sub-folder which show they’ve been inactive since the reinstall of XP. I’ve tried logging on as Administrator and giving myself full access but nothing seems to work. Anyone else run into this problem and/or have any ideas how to remove these original profiles. If I go into the User Accounts feature I only see one user account for each of us and it is the .home2 account.
Permisssions and ownership rights you need before deleting you have to ownership those folders that you want to delete then you can delete if not then you won't be able to delete them. First You have to have the simple file sharing disabled by going to my computer then Tools > Folder Options > View then go all the way down and uncheck the Use simple file sharing(recommended).
Now go to the folder that you want deleted and right click it then go to properties then security. Now remove all stuff that could be there and click on advanced nothing should appear in the permission entries then go to Owner and select your name there and check the Replace owner and subcontainers and objects. then click apply. Now go to permissions tab and you should have the Inherit from parent
the permission entries that apply to child objects. _ _ _ _ _ _ _
click ok on the advance security settings window. Now in the
security tab of the folder that you want deleted add your user name with all rights to read and write and click ok now try deleting the folder.
Or you could always convert the file system to Fat 32, boot with a dos disk, then delete them that way as well. You would need Partition Magic to convert the file system unless you're using a Fat32 structure already.
