Kids auto/exec.nt xp conflicts...help!

When I try to install/run certain new programs or even
open old files/programs in system 32, I get : C:/WINDOWS/system 32/autoexec.nt. system file not
suitable for running msDOS and microsoft windows.
(I have XP.) This only began a couple of days ago.
I have used system restore--didn't work. My system
is completely free of viruses, etc., so this is apparently
caused by something I've done/deleted. Can somebody
help me. The Dell technicians didn't solve the problem and
I've researched on my own, but have yet to find a solution.
Thanks in advance. Rebecca
