Need help testing laptop functions

I just bought a used laptop. I'm a laptop newbee. I have 2 days to check it out and make sure I'm happy with it. How do I make sure all it's parts work? Is there a general test tool I can download and run? Any help would be appreciated? O.K. more info. It's a P4-M 1.7GHz, 128 RAM, HP ZE4100,DVD-ROM, LAN/MODEM combo, XP pro 20Gig HD and came with 7 recover disks. I think the previous owner wiped it clean and reinstalled the recover software. I went to system information in the start menu and it says it has all the stuff it was advertised to have. Now I want to put the laptop through it's paces and make sure it functions properly. Is there an effective way to do this?

What i always check on a computer is that the hard drive runs ok. I mean when you turn the computer on, you will barely hear the hard drive if it sounds very noisy it might give you problems later. (it happened to me once, but it does not happen in all cases)

Also right click my computer on the desktop and then properties and check the device manager to see that it has no conflicts and things like that. you can tell that because it has question marks or X's in the devices.(on windows xp you have to go to hardware first then device manager) That's just about all i can tell you.

Hope it helps you.
