Can't configure my IRQs in XP!

How the heck can you get XP to let you do the configuring for what IRQs are assigned to what? I need to get my Audigy on it's own and the stupid thing won't let me!! Getting seriously frustrated. I turned the auto-assign off in the BIOS, turned PnP OS on... <punts machine>

This guy is new, weird!

I think you need to turn of ACPI before you can assign irq in XP. Not sure how you do that. I think there was a post here about it sometime back. Will add link if I find it.

Hi Whir,
Simply put, "you can't".. you have to change the the ACPI PC in device manager (which is the default) to Standard PC .. that will allow you to change IRQ settings ...

I think this will explain what you wanna know

Quote:
Unable to Change a Resource Setting (assign irq) in Device Manager
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The information in this article applies to:

Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Microsoft Windows XP Professional
Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
Microsoft Windows 2000 Server

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SYMPTOMS
On a computer that is running the Windows Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL), you may not be able to change a resource setting for a device in Device Manager. If you modify the resource settings in the BIOS, the changes may not register.

CAUSE
The ACPI HAL controls resource assignments in Windows and does not permit user intervention.

STATUS
This behavior is by design.

MORE INFORMATION
Microsoft does not recommend that you change the HAL that is installed during the Windows Setup process. When you change from the ACPI HAL to the Standard PC HAL, you must reinstall the operating system. ACPI functionality is then lost. In some rare instances, you may need to have control over a resource assignment. You are only able to manually configure resources in Windows when the Standard PC HAL is used, and even then you may not be able to configure the device. The device must support the ability to manually set the resources.

For additional information, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

In english go to device manager
-click on the + in front of computer
-right click the advanced configuration and power interface
-click properties
-driver tab
-update
-install from list
-choose specific
-standard pc

That will enable you to change irqs
Regards

Okay, I went and did all that, but no luck. There is a setting in the Standard PC thing that lets you turn IRQ steering on and off, turned it off and still no luck. Sometimes you just want to kick these PnP OSs...

When you did your initial install did you have the bios set to plug and play OS enabled?

Having ACPI enabled in the BIOS is what's causing the Windows installations to install ACPI HAL... With ACPI HAL, all IRQ is controlled by Windows...
