Barton AMD 2800 Running Hot

I am in desparate need of advice to lower the temperature of my CPU. My computer knowledge is not the greatest, but I know enough to understand my computer is running way to hot. My rig is built by a friend and here is the hardware:

Barton AMD 2800
ASUS A7N8X Deluxe
Corsair 512 Ram
Gainward FX5200 maybe a FX5600 not sure
WD 120G HD
CD Rom
CD Burner
Thermaltake Valcano 6Cu
1 Fan sucks air in
2 Fans blow air out

I am not familiar with C so the posting of the temps will be in F.

ASUS Probe:

125 Degrees F CPU
75 Degrees F MB

In Bios:

171 Degrees F CPU
80 Degrees F MB

MB Monitor 5

212 Degrees F CPU (This is insane and I beleive incorrect)
80 Degrees F MB

When I open the casing, it seems as though the computer has decent airflow. The wiring is was done in a way to allow maximum airflow to through the CPU. However, the fan the sucks air in is positioned and the CD Burner bay. The CPU is towards the back of the case and sits higher then the airflow coming into the case.

At this point I dont know what to do. This is such a large discepency between programs that read the temp and I dont know wich one is correct. Perhaps something in BIOS is set incorrectly or maybe I am using an outdated heat sink. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I forgot to mention that my computer locks up frequently and shutsdown when running extensive programs. I beleive that this is due to the sensors for the heat. Not sure.

WELCOME !

The Asus boards are known to have problems indicating the correct temperature .
You seem to have desent case fan airflow setup .
Your cpu heatsink is a very old design and not capable of cooling a XP2800 .
I would shop for a cpu cooler rated for a XP3200 and above , if you like it quiet , the ThermalTake silent boost seems to be a good one , don't mind noise , the ThermalTake Volcano12 is a powerful one . These are just examples of popular models , there are many other good choices out there as well .

Thanks for the feedback. Actually I gave the wrong chip, it is a XP 2500. With that i mind, do you still think that the heat sink is not adequate. I am pretty sure that it is not. I checked on AMD's website and it states to use a Volcano 10. Oddly, Thermaltake website states that the Volcano 6 can handle up to the XP2800. All I know is that my system is not stable, and I just want it to work correctly.

I still stand by my original post , the manufactors overate their products anyway , that's why I posted for XP3200 or better . AMD recommends coolers that are light weight , so they don't list the heavy copper coolers but copper is what you need , thay are the best coolers . Personally I use ThermalRight heatsinks with Enermax fans .
