cd and dvd drives not working

Hi guys. My friend is having trouble with my optical drives (both a DVD drive and a CD-RW drive). Whenever he puts in a CD or DVD, it doesn't read it all or show up when he goes into "My Computer." Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

are both drives on the same ide cable?if so change one drive to diff. ide...check cable make sure all conn. are secure...replace cable if ness....verify both drives are working...check bios and auto detect ide devices...scan for virus activity....ect...

Whew!!!! most i've ever typed all at once i think....LOL

see if any of that works....try one thing at a time so you can figure out what fixed the problem(if it does)so if you ever get this again you will know what to look at first(it's called learning....LOL)
