AGP 4X vs 8x

hey I currently have bought a Radeon 9600 pro and its in the mail, I have an AGP 4X motherboard, 2.0 ghz AMD processor, 608 mb ram. I just need to know if the video card will be able to play games like half life 2 and doom 3 without loss of frame rates or me having to dull the graphics thanks for your help.

You should not be hampered in any way by the 4x slot. 8x is basically a gimmick and selling point but not usefull.
But you will most likely have to "dull" the graphics and lower resolution with both Doom III and HL2 to keep them running smoothly.

Now I wouldn't say "don't buy a mobo with 8x capapbility."

I would say "don't buy a new mobo just for the 8x capability"

If your in the market for a new motherboard then by all means get one with 8x... you'd actually be hard pressed to find a modern board without 8x... that is just because it is the standard. Actually there will be a new round of mobos coming out soon with the new standard PCI-E (PCI express) which will be used for the new video cards.

And the 9600pro should be able to play both games well enough, but most likely not with "all" the eye candy.

ok I will think about getting a new motherboard with the 8x and faster processor speeds and able to have more ram, if I buy a new motherboard I guess that I should buy one with all the good stuff huh
