Kids cablespeed/problem - need help

i recently upgraded to cable internet service through a company called "millenium digital cable" also known as "cablespeed". I am running it on an HP 8555C(nearly 6 yrs old) w/ Win98. I also have MSN that I run my internet through. i am up to date on microsoft updates for my OS. I have scanned for viruses and do not detect any. i asked the isp what kind of modem they gave me but they do not even know the brand. it has all kinds of serial numbers but no name brand of any kind on it. all connections are fine according to me, the isp via telephone verifying it and a tech out to look at it. he was no help at all, he only knew about cable tv, not internet. not a good customer relations/satisfaction with these people so far, though i had rave reviews from friends before i joined.

My problem is complicated to me, but hopefully not to someone here. since my switch to cable, about 75% of the time i click on a link, type in a url or pick one from my favorites, the computer "clicks" it multiple times, maybe 2-5 times. thus it sends me Page Cannot Be Displayed page. sometimes i can hit Back and get back to my original screen, but most of the time I can not get that page back either. It is completely frustrating. I have blazing fast service that takes longer to use than my old dial-up service, because i am constitently typing in urls. even if i use Internet Explorer instead of MSN, it does the same thing. no difference either way. another problem, maybe unrelated, when the pages download most have images or whatnot not shown, instead the dreaded white box with the evil red little "x" in the corner. makes it difficult to navigate some pages if you can not read most of the page. i try the reset button, but i need to hit it 4 or more times to get everything on the page displayed.

i have contacted millenium digital cable and they have no clue. when i upgraded to cable i did not change any settings on my computer other then my network settings to adapt my new modem. i can not figure this out after exhausting myself for 2 weeks now trying different setting changes.

can any help? has anyone heard of this problem?
I hope it is an easy fix?
