BF1942 crashing

This has just started to happen. I'll join a game, play for maybe 2 minutes, then BF1942 crashes. No error, no sound, just crash to desktop.
I've done a google search and have found a LOT of other forum posts about this same topic, but no posted solution works.
From other forum posts, I've found that the problem is not related to any specific processor or video card.

Does anybody here know how to fix this problem?

Athlon2500+ (@3200+)
1GB PC2700 RAM
Radeon 9600XT
60GB 5400RPM HDD

I can tell you that it's not some worm doing it. The problem is not new to the BF community at all, it's really old. Here is a 9 page thread started July 11, 2003. Most of the people posting have the same problem as me. Get into the game, then it just crashes to desktop. Some of the people have ATI cards, some have Nvidia. Some have P4 processors, but most have AMD.
A lot of suggestions but no solutions

just when you said it had JUST started to happen, and other ppl were getting it, too. in this new scenario, all i can think of is the old chestnut that 3d intensive programs dump you to the desktop, but that should really have happened since you installed, if it was the cause. have you tried clocking down to stock, and notching up a little at a time, to find a stability threshold for your system. my system used to o/c from 900m up to 1 gig, but now won't go above 927m.
/edit: being a very antisocial hermit, i don't tend to play multiplayer games so i was just wondering if someone maybe had developed booter programs to use with these games, as are popular on yahoo messenger chat?

Well I found out what the problem is, but I don't know how to fix it. It's a sound problem. If I disable sounds completely, the game is rock solid. It doesn't matter which sound card I use (integrated or sound blaster), the game crashes with sound.

Does anybody have any suggestions? I've already updated the drivers for both of them, and that didn't help.

using the a3d sound setting can cause funky behaviour with some soundcards. use normal sound instead of the 3d sound settings.
sorry about dredging up old threads, but i'm stuck on reseller ratings, as techimo appears to be having a database problem at the moment.

i had similar problems gamming, and the only solution i stumbled uppon was going with a VIA envy bassed sound card. up until then i had tried audigy, audigy 2, phillips acoustic edge,a nd onboard sensura. the sensura was actually really stable, but i hated their implimentation of analog 5.1 with only 3 mini jacks (if you wanted 5.1, you didn't get your line out or your mic, the drivers would switch which one served which function when you went between 5.1 and stereo)

sorry i can't offer anything better, but i relate to your problems with sound cards and games. the creative monopoly on high quality sound hardware in gamming is really taking its toll.
