screwed up my system (help)

hey guys,

i hit something doing something in red hat fedora core 1 and screwed my whole linux system. when i boot it tries to load a module and just freezes at module 135. I cannot go into interactive mode to turn off the module that is crashing. I really do not feel like formatting my current system because my windows partition has so much of my information that i do not want to back up and restore. Can anyone tell me if there is any command or thing i can do to salvage my linux setup. Any help would be appreciated it. Someone had told me about using the linux boot disk to go to rescue mode. However i am still unsure what i do in order to use this rescue mode if this is the best solution to go about with this problem. Thanks for all your help again guys..

you can try a reinstall of linux...... if you dont feel secure about it, remember that you only need to format the partition off linux not the whole drive containing windows....

..

well yeah thats something that i could do the only problem wtih that is that is how i always fix my system and you really never learn how to fix your system when you mess it up. I mean after a while you end up like formatting your system every month or so when you screw it up big time and if you have alot of programs to install it can become very tedious and a waste of time so im trying to get some info on how to save your system without formatting it. There has to be a "safe mode" kind of way to get into the system without loading all the modules in order to fix the section in which you messed it up with.

Boot off of the CD into rescue mode.
Mount your / partition to any dir
change to dir
edit the appropriate modules file to stop the module from loading.
/etc/modules.conf (older) on Mandrake 10 it is modprobe.preload you have to edit, (not sure which on fedora)
Just remove the offending module, save the file and reboot.

thats what I said you dont need to format the whole drive only the partition containing linux (hdx), just dont touch windows partitions......

But you can try booting with the installation disc of fedora, peform the install again exactly as you did the first time.... that way you will get the system before you screw up....

But if you have the module well identified then do it as Krohnjw said....
