Is that for any mp3?

If it is a mis-labeled file, then WMP is correct. WMP reads the actual contents of the file, and doesnt depend on the file's extension alone.

(to test this theory, you could name a working .mp3 as .TechIMO and it should still play)

So, either
(1) the file has a corrupt header
(2) the file is not a valid mp3

or (3), I don't know :-x

Are you double clicking an MP3 when it fails?
If so your file associations maybe off

Is the MP3 valid? Does it play in another media player?
Possible corruption?

Possible corrupt codec
