Computer wont turn on.

Last night I was playing reversi online. Suddenly the lights went dim and my computer shut down. All my other appliances still stayed on only my computer shut down. My monitor was blank but the light was yellow instead of green.

I mention this because my monitor and computer are on the same powerstrip. I tried to repower up but got nothing. No lights no fans not even the power fan came on.

Thinking it was something wrong with my power box I hit the test buttons of the Arc Fault Brakers. Now I have no power in my bedrooms but still have power in the rest of the house. So I can do no further tests till I get the power turned back on.

Do you think it is just my power supply? I can smell no scent of burning coming from the computer.

My mb is a K7S5A I have 512 megs of Micron ram 2100. My power supply is a generic Comp USA 400 watt it is about six months old. Muse 5.1 Soundcard FX5200. I have 3 harddrives and two optical drives. Also have 1 pci ide controller and a pci tv card.

I am hoping to be able to bootup when I get power back. But if I am not I am hoping it is just a dead power supply. I can get a cheap one for $25 and free shipping

I have a multimeter I can use what kind of tests should I do with it?

tia

Sounds like you were getting only partial power when the lights dimmed. As long as you didnt get a spike (hopefully you have a good strip) your pc should be fine.

unplug your powerstrip. reset your breakers. make sure you have supply to the socket your strip was connected to, use a lamp, mains radio or whatever. now, if you have supply, one at a time, test your devices which had been plugged into the strip, directly at the wall outlet. now WITH THE STRIP STILL UNPLUGGED FROM THE WALL run continuity tests from the pins of the strip's plug, to the relevant socket connections on the strip. test all the positions on the strip to make sure they all work. now run a high resistance test on the strip plug between the live and neutral, live and earth and then the neutral and earth pins, to ensure no short circuits. make sure any fuse link in the strip and strip plug works with a continuity test BEFORE you run any other test on the strip. if there are ANY burn (brown or black) marks on the strip, then replace it. live = hot,
earth = ground and i don't remember what americans call their neutral ac phase return line. also if you have fuse links in your plugtops, check those.

Thanks for all your replys. Seems it was a false alarm. Got brakers reset, plugged in the powerstrip and computer turned on. Thank G_d so I don't need a new power supply(Tho it might be nice to have a backup). Again thanks for the help.
