windows xp ips

hi am new to this forum looks good

right i have got a big prob with computer
for some reason my ip on my network card changes from isp one to some like 169.xxx.xx.x instead of 82.xx.xx.xx is there a way to manually set the ip for the card

it has been doing this for a few weeks on and off

i had outpost 2.1 installed
and nod32

i have tried to unistall outpost when ip goes off with no luck

also unistalled nod32 no luck

after a reformat
it is ok for awhile then

when got
firewall and virus checker on after a few hours it goes off .

could it be one of them changing the ip or
is network card nackered?

anyhelp would be good

thanks

Send a message via Yahoo to muno
169.254.x.y is the address a nic gets in windows (excluding w95) when it no longer has connection to dhcp server.
(it's called apipa, automatic private ip addressing)

Have you tried some other fw?

Welcome to TechIMO!

I agree with muno - probably the firewall. "After a reformat" means full windows reformat? Clean reinstall?

Try removing the firewall again (complete uninstall, not just disabling it), then try in a command prompt ipconfig /all and see what it gives. If it's still a APAPI address (169.xxx.xxx.xxx) then try ipconfig /renew and see what error message you get.

Post back here if nothing works.

Cheers
Mick
