Higher quality = better frame rates?

With past video cards (5200, GF2 Ti) turning video resolution up would sometimes give higher frame rates. For example, my FX5200 would give much higher frame rates when running JK2 at 1024x768 than it would in 640x480.

I've posted a few times about how much BF1942 lags really bad with no AA, no AF, and half-ass in-game settings. I've turned on 6x AA and now the game runs really fast. I'm getting almost 90fps at all times with 6x AA and all in-game settings turned all the way up (still at only 800x600 though).
My video card is a 9600XT

Is there some logical reason for why higher quality gives higher frame rates?

That's the first I've ever heard of it. In most test's/reviews, turn up the eye candy and AA options lowers frame rates.

Well, when the FX cards first came out, I noticed one thing in the benchmarks I was seeing- they did very well at higher resolutions. It's the way they were designed apparently.

I wish my 9500Pro did better at higher res and settings. I can watch that sucker go down to 2 or 3 fps in some games.
