windows updates

i have a little problem people. I just helped one of my friends with their lsass problem, (I just downloaded the windows updates). While doing this her roomate asked me to help with her computer. I noticed that she hasn't done windows updates in... well, forever. I put it in her settings so that it automatically checks for updates.

Thats not the problem. the problem is i tried doing the updates manually, and only a few of them got through and updated. The rest keep popping up errors saying that they failed microsoft logo something or other (I can't remember off the top of my head).

Another problem with her computer is, I'm trying to install the SP1 patch and an error pops up saying "Setup could not verify the integrity of the file Update.inf. Make sure the Cryptographic service is running on this computer." How do I get past this?

AS always your help is greatly appreciated.

This computer with the update problems isn't "tweaked" is it? Some of those tweak sites out there give really bad advice about which services you should turn off. There are certain Windows services that you need active (manual or automatic) in order to install updates.

Another reason you might not be able to install updates is if that copy of Windows was cracked instead of activated.

What OS is she running, and did she pay for it? XP updates can be dicey if it's a BU copy.

damn I feel like an idiot, I forgot the specs. She is running an HP pavilion 510n with XP Home. She is running a 100% legal machineand non-tweaked. Nothing is turned off or on that I know of.
