Food frequent lagging in win xp pro sp1

Hi guys. Whenever i use my computer such as just chatting online, using MS Word, or even just accessing one of my hard drives, it suddenly lags like ****! I go into the processes and i notice that the explorer spurts from like 11,000 usage to about 80,000 and up. Is tehre anyway to fix this lag problem in XP? I recently just got all the updates and it has not helped at all. Thanks for any help.

what are the system specs?

do you have all the eye candy off?

do you have system restore still enabled for some reason?

ah that used to happen to me. when was the last time you reformatted? everything may be getting bogged down and yucky... start thinking about a reformat

you could always end task explorer and then run a new one too but you'd be doing that everytime it happened.

Ok here are my specs:

Abit NF7-S v.2.0 (bios 23)
AMD Athlon XP 2500 (watercooled with maze 3 at 182x12)
1GB DDR400 (2-2-2-11)
Ati Radeon 8500 LE 128MB (288 core x 258.75 memory)
Buslink 4x DVD±RW
DVD-ROM 16x
WD400BB
Maxtor 250gb
2x 120gb Maxtors in Raid 0

And yes, my overclocks are stable ever since i built the computer so i know its not my overclocking. I've done thorough scan disk checkings on all my partitions along with defragging them. It mainly happens when i access my 250gb hard drive. But again, i did the thorough scan disk checking along with defragging it at least 4x and still it happens. Any help? Thanks.
