Formatting my hard drive...

I need to format my hard drive for various reasons, but I'm having a few problems.

I've got a 120GB HDD that is partitioned off into 3 partitions labeled C:, D:, and E: I ONLY want to format the C: partition because that is where I keep my operating system and all my installed programs. I need to keep drives D: and E: because that is where i store all my mp3s and other media.

A friend told me that there is no way to format partition C: without also formatting D and E. Is it possible for me to do this? It's very important that i dont format partitions D and E.

Otherwise, I'll have to buy another hard drive, copy everything I want to keep over to the new hard drive, then format my old one... and that is a pain in the ass, and i dont have any money right now for a new HDD

Any help would me much appreciated.
thanks

format c:\ will do it and leave other drives and partitions, even ones on the same drive as yours are, intact.if in doubt, backup your important data, but you are okay with the format command as long as you use the right drive letter.

You friend is getting confused with FDISK and FORMAT. You only want to be using FORMAT.

If you have PartitionMagic boot up using the rescue diskettes and format C that way.

Otherwise, paul9 is quite correct.

Back up your data, just in case you make a mistake carrying out this very simple command.

There'd be no point in partitions if you couldn't format just one.
