Win XP telling me it won't install over Win ME

I'm trying to upgrade to Windows XP. I have windows ME. It tells me it won't upgrade when there is another operating system on it already! My son used this on his computer with the ME already on it and had no problem. Thank you.

If this is the same CD then you will have to buy another COA.
XP is only good for one computer per license. You will not be able to activate it and it will expire in 30 days.

This is a long story. You see we both used the CD, it's the upgrade. And yes I tried booting up with the CD and still no luck.
But I had xp for almost a year when it started making things disappear. My printer, my modem, odd things. Suddenly one day I decided enough already we'll just reformat and start from scratch.

So since all I have is the upgrade version and I have ME on disk I reinstall ME, then I have to upgrade to XP. I did this several months ago with no problem. Now suddenly it's telling me it can't do it and I'm stuck with ME! ME is awful.

See the problem? It doesn't make any sense. I haven't changed any hardware or anything since I upgraded to XP because everything was working just great till the disappearing act a few weeks ago.

Ig

That's not true. I have the same copy of XP Home on 4 computers. None of them have a problem.

It's home version. What it actually says is "WIN XP cannot install since there is already another Operating System on your computer." Or something like it. Well of course I have another operating system it's Win ME!

It says it's a blocking issue.

I've not upgraded before. Only fresh installs. But my understanding is that you can do a complete install with the XP upgrade CD on a formatted disk. Because you have the upgrade version, at some point it will ask for the "ME" disk. You put it in the drive, XP sees that you have it and carries on with the installation.

Bailey is correct. I have done XP and 2000Pro upgrades with no OS installed, just have the original OS disk( in your case, ME) ready so XP can verify it.
