Kids Red Hat 7 - HELP! NEWBIE!

Ok I am a Newwwwwwwwwwwwwbie with a capital N in all aspects of Linux. I have some clue about computers in general, but mainly I am an all around newbie. I don't like the direction Gates is heading with (give away all your privacy - Windows) so I want to learn about Linux.

I have an old dell computer with 350 MHZ proc with 192 Megs of Ram. Anyhow, I went to the library and checked out a Red Hat 7 Book and installed it because it came with a cd. I just realized that Red Hat has a version 9, but I just want to install 7 for now. I will worry about version 9 later.

Is Red Hat the best? Are there other free versions out there? Sorry for sounding completely stupid here, but I don't know anything about Linux.

Well I do not know how to get on the Internet with my Linux computer.

My Network is like this:

Linux Computer ----> Netgear Router (192.168.0.1) ------> Sprint DSL Modem (192.168.1.1) ------> Internet

I have a Linksys network card...

Right now, I cannot ping my router. I can only ping 127.0.0.1

How do I set up my Network adapter? How do I get on the Internet? My router currently automatically assigns ip addresses as a DHCP server. So how do I get it to assign one to my Linux OS?

Also how do I login to root from my current profile?

Sorry for asking a lot of dumb questions, but I don't know where else to ask them. I wish someone around here could just teach me everything I want to know. I live in a small town and know one around here knows anything about computers...

Thanks in advance,
DayAfter

Ahh...welcome to the light side of the force! (or is it dark side? I can never remember ).

Linux is a very different experience from Windows, but once you get used to all the little quirks and such, it's as natural as opening MS Office (but w/out the bloat ).

So far your questions are not dumb at all, as RH should recognize your Network card from the install. First thing you'll need to do is login as root.

(To answer your question, switching to root requires the use of the command 'su'. Just type it in and enter the password. to get out, tpe exit. Note that this does NOT carry over into Xwindows, and for that you'll either have to log in as root, or you enter the password when it asks. If you have no idea what 'su and 'exit are for, get into the console/terminal/DOS Prompt/whatever teh heck you kids call it today)

Here's a tutorial for RH7.3 (the version you are using, right?) on setting up the network:

Have fun!

To answer your other question, Red Hat is not the Linux I would have started out with, but it IS the first real taste of Linux I ever had. I reccomend you check out Mandrake, but only once you have a better machine. There are many, many distributions, check out a good sampling at:
