Windows Messenger 5.0?

I was surfing at Microsoft's website when I encountered this page. Apparently there is a new version for Windows Messenger available. The page says it was published in March this year, and I didn't even know about this. How come? Because I have been using Windows Messenger 4.7 and it hasn't alerted me that a new version is available to download. The new version is also not available at Windows Update, which I think is a bit weird. What's up with this? Did anyone know that this version was available? If so, how did you know? I can't believe I missed the release. Boy am I confused right now.

They could be releasing it quietly to let the guinea pigs errrr... initial installers crash..errr optimize their system with it

I'd heard about it a few weeks ago reading an article saying Yahoo had just released a major update as well to their messenger.

Huh, I was wondering if they would get arond to this, or if Windows Messenger had been abandoned. MSN Messenger has moved far ahead in features, but not Windows Messenger.

I still don't quite understand why they have two, virtually identical IM clients. Couldn't they just stick with the one bundled in XP (Windows Messenger) and offer versions for 98 and 2000???

i was using windows messenger 4.7, but now I'm using MSN messenger 6, they are about the same! I figured they had abandoned windows messenger. It's like they are competing with themselves.
