Reformatted. And a plethora of errors.

*sigh* I begin:

Decided to reformat my computer (Windows XP, NTFS). Did so, and when it tried to start up I got the dreaded NTLDR error. So I copied NTLDR and ntdetect from the Win XP Pro cd and hoped for the best.

Now, I'm getting <windows root>\system32]hal.dll as my error. It's missing. And when I tried typing expand d:\i386hal.dl_c:\windows\system32\hal.dll it says the file does not exist.

I've already reformatted. There's nothing left on the computer. What the heck can I do now?

Okay: update.

it's a boot.ini problem.

So I tried bootcfg /list (to which nothing was found).
Then bootcfg /rebuild

and got this:

Error: Failed to successfully scan disks for Windows installations. This may be cause by a corrupt file system, which would prevent bootcfg from successfully scanning.

Possibly a bad cd?
Do you have another copy of the CD to work from?

If this happened to me, I'd probably go into Fdisk, delete the partition (assuming you're using a single partition on this?) and then start over.......create a new partition (ntfs), format again, then install again from scratch. If that don't work, the entertainment value of dropping a computer from a 2nd story window is almost worth the price of admission!

My favorite answer on these forums: www.killdisk.com

This ute will write zeros to your hdd, making it as close to "new" as possible. Then, reinstall the OS like normal.

In my experience, sometimes viruses or corrupt WIN files are reinstalled if you simply fdisk. Fdisking deletes the file system, not the files.

You didn't mess with the HDD jumper setting, did you?
