Intel or AMD???
Ok. I was in a store yesterday and I heard a couple idiots talking about computer stuff, regardless. One of them mentioned that he is done with Pentium because his "friend" told him that AMD was better for gaming.
I have a Pentium 4, 3 Ghz 800 FSB and I think it's kickass! I heard that AMD procs although are more affordable tend to burn out faster than Pentiums and also that they are louder. I'm not here to bash AMD I just want to finally find out which is better of the two and why. So far I think from research and personal experience I think Pentium is the better CPU.

AMD and Intel are generally on par with eachother, neither kicks the other particularly badly. Intel are more expensive and AMD are slightly cheaper. But i hear AMD processors are slightly better in games (althought im sure its not by much) http://www6.tomshardware.com/cpu/200...escott-11.html

P.S. Threads like this give me a headache

AMD is cheaper, but runs hotter, so you need to consider the noise multiple fans is going to cause.
When I got my first Dell machine, the PowerEdge 400SC (2.8c P 4), I was pretty sure something was VERY WRONG right out of the box, as I couldn't hear the damn thing! I couldn't believe the difference, and was quite stoked as I was using this as a media box in my bedroom. My ceiling fan makes more noise. Also, with the deal from Dell, it was like I got the entire system for @ $50 more than the price of the 2.8c chip from Newegg.
On the other hand, people seem to think the AMDs are great overclockers, which might widen the price gap even more if speed's the thing.

You know...at this point...I don't think it really matters which you get...
...your P4 is "kick ass"... Here's AMD vs Intel from 1994-2003
AMD is not so much of a bargain anymore...considering performances are so close to each other and the differences in $$ is only a couple of bucks these days.
I'd get the fastest chip you could afford...then worry more about your video card if your interested in games...a 3GHz chip isn't going to run your games if you spend all your money on it and then get a cheap video card...

AMD's run hotter and burn up faster is a myth! Back in the day it was true, but now AMD chips run cooler then their Intel counterparts.
The major advantage with AMD is price, though some will dispute this. Remember, their more to a computer than just the CPU, ya gots to get memory and a mobo.
If you do content creation stuff or rip mp3s Intel is the shiz.
For highly fpu intensive apps (like games) AMD has a definite advantage.

They'll use a singe fan to cool the motherboard, the video card and the cpu.
Saying a Dell is quieter than a generic AMD machine is not a fair comparison. A Dell is also quieter than any generic Pentium machine.
