Help a newbie-wannabe computer tech...no sound

Hi everyone,

I'm a newbie and have run out of things to try to get sound from my PC. I built the PC myself (after reading thousands of forums here) and everything works except the sound.

I have an Asus P4PE-X with an integrated sound. Here's more info from manual about the onboard sound "The ADI AD1980 is an AC'97 CODEC that allows 6-ch audio playback...."

Here's the situation: I used an older Boston A635 after I built the computer.....didn't work. I made sure that I had the latest drivers for the card, but nothing. So I bought a Logitech X220 speakers and good news......the speaker power comes on, but still no sound. The green power light is on the speaker, both speaker and subwoofer volumes are up, computer sound volumes up and un-muted, downloaded latest drivers from Asus again, and it is plugged into the correct jack in the back of the computer. What's going on? Any suggestions? What else should I try? Help, the silence is killing me.

thx in advance

check the device manager to see if there are any conflicts with the sound

Check and see if the 'wave' slider is all the way to the top in your sound properties...

thx for all the help.

I went to the device manager window and clicked on Sound and there were no "Xs" by any of it. Any other suggestions?

Sometimes you need to go into the bios to enable onboard sound.

Have a pair of headphones and a headphone jack? If so, see if THAT works.

Speakers connected to the 'green' jack? (not pink/blue/orange/black, etc)

Speakers plugged into the jack the whole way? (not halfway in or something)

pardon the stupid Q, but how do I adjust the "wave" slider all the way up?

BIOS? Scary word. Audio is set to "Auto"

You should have a speaker icon in the task bar.

Double click it.

Control Panel -> Sounds and Audio Devices -> Volume [Advanced...]

Adjust the sliders. You should see "Master Volume", "Wave", "CD Audio", etc..
