HP 6578 color cartridge problems

I am having problems with these HP 6578 color cartridges. The printer is a 932C.

These cartridges are 'refurbished' since I refuse to pay $40 (or whatever the price is) for a 'new' one.

The biggest problem is the printer detecting it as a 'empty' cartridge after I refill it. I tried the remove cartridge, turn printer off, turn back on, replace cartridge trick and it doesn't always work. I don't know if the order matters (if you should unplug first or turn off first for example) or not. I also tried the tapeing of a couple of the contacts trick and that isn't foolproof either.

Is there a way to permamently disabling this annoying 'detection' feature or just better way of doing this?

The problem is that once the chip indicates the cartridge is empty, it's locked. There may be a chip reset device available at a vendor of the refill kits. Other than that, you have to refill before the chip indicates empty.

I was told that you can clear the memory of the printer by unplugging it without a color cartridge installed.
There is also another waay to tape up the top 3 or 4 upper left and/or right contacts of the cartridge.

What you say is completely different. Where did you see/read about this?

I have the same printer and the same problems. I got a refill kit and they won't work. I may be doing something wrong but I tried to clear that memory. I unplugged it, turn on the printer without the carts, Removed and reinstalled the printer programs, etc. I ended up getting new carts and the printer gave me a hard time getting these new carts to install. I thought I almost ruined the printer.

Do you have a 'puddle' of black ink at the bottom of the well below where the cartridges are parked?

No I didn't luckily but with my earlier printer (apollo) I did have a puddle after refilling. Too much ink I guess. I gave up refilling them.

Look closer in that pocket under where the cartridges park themselves with a flashlight. I bet you will see a 'stalagmite' like sludge there! There is mention of that at HP site:

i had an apollo printer. it accidentally fell down the stairs. right after the carts packed in again. anyway, i found that the apollo/hp carts will only refill a few times. the actual printheads are on the cartridge. these may have been damaged. a good solution is to buy an epson printer. and keep clear of the stairs in case of falling hp/apollo printers.

Nice little secret HP has isn't it?
I figure about 25% of the black ink is wasted there!
