Need help w/ "dead" monitor

One of our 21" Dell monitors stopped working at work, and I "threw it out" by taking it home, hopeing to fix it. No luck with that yet, and I'm out of ideas.

I first noticed it making odd popping noises, and the screeen would flicker. It would do this a time or two a day, until it became more frequent, and finally it just wouldn't show anything on the screen, even the monitor adjustment utility. I'd really love to get it working again--any ideas?

Sounds like a bad transformer. Working on these things is not really a DIY type of job. However, there are places that repair monitors for cheap. If you can find one in your area, for about $40, you would have yourself a decent monitor.

Hey Nihm,

I would do a search on Google, with the make, model, and maybe "common repairs".

Also, you could bring it to a computer shop for a "free" diagnosis/estimate, and then decide if you wath to repair/try yourself.

FYI, working on monitors can be dicey, and I believe you need to have them unplugged for quite a while before opening it up to discharge any residual electricity. I believe there's enough voltage to kill you, so be careful.
