Reinstalled but still crashes!

Hi all,

A month or so ago I posted about the fact that my PC would suddenly freeze and crash. It was recommended that I reinstall it with ACPI (originally it was installed as a Standard PC). Anyway, after the reinstallation I am now getting the same problem, where the screen freezes up and I have to reboot.

After a crash, I often have trouble booting up if I press the reset key on the tower. It may stop when it detects hard drives (but may stop at any point in the boot up).

There are no IRQ conflicts except the USB port (unused) and the soundcard on 5, but Ive been told this shouldn't be a problem. Ive tried disabling the USB but it makes no difference.

Could this be an issue with the graphics card? Or a software issue. Ive updated all drivers etc.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

Hi,

I didn't see your original post so I don't know anything about your PC.

Can you tell us a little more about what you or your machine is doing when it actually crashes. If you find you are doing the same or same type of operation everytime you have the problem this will help to identify where the problem lays.

Cheers

what are you (or the computer) doing when the system crashes?

Hi,

Thanks to Tazzin for the link to the previous post.

Now I have seen that, can you enlighten us as to anything you have done since your last post over there where you were going to check out memory and the PSU?

The PSU issue is a very valid one and is more common than you might think. Unstable Power can cause the CPU to lock up and this will lead to the conditions you describe.

As was suggested early in your other post if these problems developed after the install of some of your drivers then maybe this is where you should be looking.

I don't know what the XP equivalent of Selective Startup is but I am sure one of the gurus here could tell you( that is if it even exists as that).

Cheers

Check your power management. Sometimes power management can cause problems with software running on the computer and may cause crash. You can go into it and turn it off to see if thats whats causing the problem.

My first guess would be the memory. Some memory doesn't work well with some motherboards. If you go to your motherboard manufacturer's website, they should have a list of memory that's known to work flawlessly with the motherboard.

I once had some memory that didn't work well with my motherboard. It wasn't as bad as your problem, but it would restart randomly. It wouldn't go through the shutdown process, but it would just shut off instantly and boot up again (happened especially during memory hungry operations like games). EXTREMELY ANNOYING! I put up with it for about a year and a half until finally getting some new sticks.

P.S. I love Newcastle. Favorite beer of all time!
