Kids security prompt for downloading .exe files

I want to remove the stupid "Save or Open" this type of file prompt for IE and .exe files. I run IE 6.0 and windows XP with sp1a installed. When the prompt comes up the "Always ask with this type of file" box is checked and greyed out. I just want the .exe file to open. I can click the "open" button and the app works correctly, but I don't want to have to click that before the file runs.

It has to be a global setting of some sort. I have an app that launches an .exe file from the local hard drive and the stupid prompt appears with that file.

I have some computers that launch it normally and others that prompt before opening.

Any help is appreciated.

I bet you can do something in IE Internet options/security/Custom Level...

Or maybe Internet options/advanced/ and select Enable Install On Demand (Internet Explorer)

EDIT: I believe you want to look at setting a security zone that is low for apps coming from your machine, without messing with you global internet settings, as vass will tell you in the next post.

usually when you download there is a checkbox that says "Don't ask me for this type of file"

Hope you like spyware

--- edit ---
just looked, that box is greyed out for EXE files
It says "Always ask for this type of file" and its checked.

Apparently its a bug

Note If you install this update, the Always ask before opening this type of file check box is not available, and you cannot click to clear it. The Always ask before opening this type of file check box is not available for file types that run programs or commands, such as files with the extensions .exe or .com. When this check box is not available, you are always asked before you open this type of file.A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This fix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Windows XP service pack that contains this fix.

I think i read somewhere that there was a registry edit for this, but I don't really remember, I'll take a look around.

Gaming same problem

I can't find a registry fix for this. Well..I found one, but it does not work. It says to edit the third octet of the HKC\exefile entry but that does not ungrey or deselect the check box.

You would figure that this would be a fairly common problem and easy fix.

Thanks for your replies...keep em coming.
