Changing the name of a Directory in 'Documents and Settings'...

Hi.

Barely any experience at all with Windows. The kid who installed XP on my cpu was trying to be funny and named the directory/folder in 'Documents and Settings' something less than desirable. I need to know how to rename that folder. Also, someone mentioned that this could really screw things up? Should I reinstall the OS again or can I rename it? The folder in questions contains the Cookies, Desktop, My Documents, Windows and Start Menu folders. It also contains the Favorites folders.

If it is ok to rename, what is the best way to rename it as the system will not let me change it up...command line?

Thanks for any help...

M

OK, those folders are for your user account.

Do this, it's very easy
  • Click Start
  • Click Control Panel
  • Click User Accounts
  • Click on "Change an account"
  • Click on the account with the "less than desirable" name
  • Click "Change My Name"
  • Enter the new name for the account
  • Click apply
  • You're all done Just exit out of the open windows that are left

Forget it, this will change your user name, but it won't change the name of the store folder in Documents and Settings

So you can't right click on it and choose 'rename' ?

You could, but those are system files and renaming the folder will most likely kill the user account or the entire Windows install.

The only option that I can think of would be to create a new account for yourself and deleting the old one (not saving files), or a complete reinstall of Windows.
