Graphics Requirements

I have a question reguarding graphics requirements in games. When the minimum requirements state that a "16 mb DirectX 8.0b compatible card is required" does that mean that you have to buy a card that is billed as being DirectX 8.0b compatible? Or would something like a 32mb Geforce2 be sufficient?

I am wondering because I have a client who is trying to play a game which has this requirement, and they have very little money!

From what I read I think the GeForce 2 MX400 card is only optimized for Directx 7 or lower.

Sometimes it is hit-or-miss.

The 'GeForce2' has hardware support for DirectX 7 and lower. However, the nVidia drivers allow you to run DirectX 9 (software support).

Some games, however, require hardware support. It may still play, but may not be the best. For example, cards that support 'Texture Compression' (GeForce3 and later) may perform much better than a card that doesn't (Geforce2 or lower).

Basically, if there are drivers that allow the card to support 'DirectX 8' or 'DirectX 9', the game should probably work. However, performance and quality may be hindered without hardware support.

Someone may have a better way of explaining it.

rpertusio - That is kind of what I figured... I know the performance will probably take a hit but this guy doesn't even have an AGP slot - I'll be getting the PCI edition of whatever I can find for $30.
