Systems I need help tossing all the junk...

I have been having various strange problems with my pc and would like to "clean it out" as you would occasionally with a junk drawer, but I have no idea what all this stuff is and whether or not it's necessary for my PC performance. I would like to take it down to basics and start from there if I can. I wouldn't mind doing a quick restore except for the fact that I have tons of favorites, e-mail addresses and photos that I don't want to lose. I have an older machine that only writes to floppies and I am not thrilled with the idea of sitting at my PC forever and a day and copying everything to floppies (that I would have to go out and buy). Any ideas would be appreciated.

perhaps get a cdrw drive if one'll fit in your system then burn everything to cds (cheaper but not as safe), or maybe get an external hd and a adapter card, depending on what the hd uses (expensive but less chance of data loss).

Hi Junebug,

Welcome to TechIMO!

IMHO, I believe it's time for you to ease into the fast-paced world of CD-RWs, more commonly referred to as CD burners. They're cheap, effective, easy to use, and if you're the adventurous type, easy to install in your machine. For around $20 after mail in rebate, you're in.

We need details on your machine: Make, model number, operating system (Windows 98, Windows 2000, ect), and amount of memory(MBs of ram, if possible).

If you have a Yahoo Account you can upload 30MB of stuff into your briefcase (at least I can). I would first scour your computer for all the files you want to keep.. pictures, videos, mp3's etc.. and move them into one folder. Either buy or use a friends CD/DVD Burner to burn to a CD/DVD. Clean your computer up.. and copy the files back on the HD from the CD.

Yeah, I've been playing around with the idea of getting a CDRW, but I don't know if it's worth it on this machine, which I'm sure is completely obsolete, but here are my specs:

I have a Compaq Presario 5150 with an AMD-K6 3d processor using 256 mg RAM 74% of which is free
Liteon CD ROM LTN301
standard floppy
RAGE LT PRO AGP 2X
Officejet 6100 all in one attached by USB
Kodak DX3600, also attached by USB
standard ergonomic keyboard (no shortcut buttons)

I'm not sure what information you need. Please let me know if I let anything out.

-- I thought of this too, Tazzin, and I actually tried to start to do that earlier today, but I couldn't figure out how to upload what I wanted without having to do each link from my favorites individually. Is there a way that I can store my entire list of favorites, for example, all at once?

one great first step to get it "cleaned out"...is to run a spyware cleaner....like the free "Adaware6"

from www.lavasoftusa.com

download it, install it...click on "update"..then click "next" twice and it will find spyware that slows ur comp down and causes other issues.

favorites are tiny and can fit on a floppy no problem

just go to the windows folder, look in it and you'll see the "favorites" folder...just right click on the favorites folder and go "send to 3 1/2 floppy" and it will put it on a floppy for you.
