Home Network Help

Hi,

Well I have finally done it after all my saying AOL isn't so bad I have gone the whole hog and signed up for an ADSL Connection elsewhere.

This is due to be hooked up this week and I have a few questions before I get started.

I am going to hook to the ADSL Line with a Netgear DG834 ADSL Firewall Router and then hook each of my machines to the router. They would actually already be hooked up if the delivery co had actually remembered to bring my cables when they brought the Netgear box.

My questions are:

1, Do I need to have an additional Firewall as well as the Routers one?

2, I am running ZA Pro on two of the machines and the std XP Affair on another is this ok or do I have to turn some or all of them off?

Cheers

zone alarm is still good to run on all the machines even with a hardware firewall. ZA is good if you want to configure microsoft network sharing as well. thats what i use even with a linksys router.

i dont know what kind of firewall the netgear comes with but im sure it has one and between that and ZA you should be ok.

Hi,

Righto I got the cables and have three PC's connected together at the moment. They al have their own names and are all in MSHOME they all see each other. So far so good.

My ADSL isn't due to be activated till tomorrow so I can't do anything along that road at the moment.

The question I have now is this.

Lets give the PC's No's instead of names for ease of explanation.

PC 1 Win 2k Pro
PC 2 Win XP Pro
PC 3 Win ME

PC 1 can see and can access all the shared files on the other two ( it used to be connected to PC 2 by a crossover cable)

PC 2 can see and access all the shared files on the other two.

PC 3 can see and access all the shared files on PC 2 but only sees some of the files on PC 1

The files it doesn't see are on a partition on the main HDD if this makes any difference.

PC 1 has an NTFS Partition for the OS and 5 other FAT 32 Partitions on one HDD and another two FAT 32 HDD's connected to it

PC 2 has the std NTFS setup on both partitions

PC 3 has FAT 32 on one HDD with Win ME and FAT 32 on another with Win 98 SE installed

Can anyone tell me why I can't view all the files from all the PC's?

Cheers
