MPG to AVI converter needed.

Anybody know of any good fast video format converters? Specifically I need one to convert mpg video to avi video. Preferrably for free too.

VirtualDubMod can convert both MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 files to the AVI container format, but the process is slow due to recompression with an AVI-compatible codec.

It has been awhile since working with video, but VirtualDubMod may also be capable of performing a direct stream copy of the MPEG data to a AVI container file. Open the MPEG file, select stream copy for both video and audio, then try saving the result to an AVI format.

I use a program called AVS converter. The trial version will put their logo on the middle of your screen until you register it. It's pretty good. It converts a lot of common formats without a lot of rigamarole. But when you convert formats, the faster the less clear.

Virtual Dub is good, but it creates huge AVI files. I mean HUGE!

The files are only huge with VirtualDub if you dump the a/v streams to the default uncompressed formats.
