Power Supply curiosity

Sorry, i didnt know where to put this thread. Im just curious how to estimate how big of a power supply to use for a pc. Im not building one and i dont need a new one i just want to know how you judge the size of it. i.e. cd roms use X watts, HDDs use X watts...
