Networking Problem

Hi Folks I have recently setup a network at home running a win 2000 Domain Controller and XP PRO. I seem to have a connectivity problem as I can only ping 1 way ??? I can ping the 2000 DC from XP but not from XP to 2000 DC, how can you only ping 1 way? This has led to problems trying to join the domain I get error message that says "The specified server cannot perform the requested operation.". In network places the XP 'sees' 2000 DC and the 2000 DC 'sees' XP yet it still only pings one way, any help would be much appreciated.

do you have dhcp setup?
Make sure you have a default gateway set correctly

can you ping the localhost? 127.0.0.1

Yes DHCP is setup on the 2000 DC, does it need to be enabled in some way on XP? Loopback works fine on both PCs. I believe the default gateway is set correctly- set to 2000 DC ip address. Oh yeah I'm running them thru a Acer Switch so I can connect 1 more PC when I'm ready, the switch is OK, so I'm told, that is, it performed admirably in its last post. Also I have set XPs ip address manually, could that be a problem? Any other thoughts?

Someone told me it might be firewall on XP I tied to turn this off but the advanced tab on properties for the LAN connection are unavailable. I tried to correct this using system restore but to no effect. Can anyone tell me how to restore the advanced tab information with out a reinstall?
