Weird BF1942 lag

In BF1942 I get excellent frame rates if I'm just standing still or moving in a straight line. If I turn around, my frame rate just dies for at least 2 seconds then it climbs back to where it should be. This turning lag keeps getting me killed; I just want to know how to stop it.

AthlonXP 2500+ (at 3200+)
Radeon 9600XT
1GB RAM
Windows XP Home
application controlled AA
application controlled AF
highest texture quality (both driver and in game)
highest draw distance (in game)
lowest graphics quality (in game)
highest effects quality (in game)

800x600x32 @ 85hz.

First thing that came to my mind was low memory, buut, you have a gig, so thats not the problem. Is there any hard drive activity when it stutters?

Nope, no hard drive activity.

I'm playing Desert Combat mod.

DC is pretty taxing on the system. I noticed when I Alt+Tab out of the game and come back in, the initial seconds are bad but then it clears up.

May I ask why you run at such a low resoloution?

Sometimes it can be as simple (or complicated) as your sound settings. Try using (or turning off) hardware acceleration in the options, and see if that makes a difference. Problems with sound often reveal themselves as 'laggy' issues.

Although I'm not confident this IS the solution, I wanted to make you aware of it before you give up.

Because any higher resolution and the game is laggy as hell. With the settings listed above, it's very hard to maintain over 70fps. At 1024x768, it's impossible to have over 60fps, regardless of quality settings. It's weird but when it comes to BF1942, my Radeon 9600XT is not any faster than my FX 5200 (non ultra) was. Maybe that game just hates ATI video cards, I don't know.

10fps at that speed is hardly noticable. Do you notice a difference? I would sacrifice 10fps for better resoloution. I think anything over 35fps is decent and managable.

Low frame rates don't cut it in BF. 60fps in Vice City looks great. 70fps in BF still looks half-assed.
