formatting

well, i have searched high and low for similiar issues to mine on this and other forums and have been very successful yet i still cannot resolve this problem.

i deleted the partition that win xp os was on (c using bootmagic rescue diskettes. of course the ever popular message after startup saying "ntldr missing" appears. i set cd-rom as first drive to boot, install xp pro disc, and same result after startup.

i really just want to format my two raid 0 enabled 80gb seagate hdd's but this is proving to be a challenge. can i get the hdd's back to where they were when i built this rig (blank and ready to install os)?

thoughs, thanks in advance!

Fill the drives with zeroes using Killdisk or the drive manufacturers utility. Then they will be exactly like they came from the store.

You can use a zero fill format utility and that will leave your drives "RAW" which is as close to brand new, out of the box, never been used as you can get. You should have gotten a floppy or something with the drives that has the drive mfgs version of a zero fill format utility OR you can go to the drive mfg site and download it for free.

okay, i am at blue killdisk screen and under devices it only lists my floppy drive. where are my fixed drives? i'll look around for troubleshooting but in the meantime... any suggestions?

i am using the free version of killdisk. killdisk site says pro version ($) supports more than 1 hdd.

These members are leading you astray. You need only to remove your current partitioning.

You can boot into the Windows XP recovery console and use the diskpart utility to repartition. Or you may find it easier to simply destroy and recreate your array, which usually does the same.

yes, i have also found this to be true sechs. i destriped then recreated array and this has done the trick [seem like the process should have been accompanied by a progress bar or some indictor/message that says "all data to be removed"]

nevertheless, i have no os. for some reason i still cannot boot from xp pro cd [but my xp64 will boot and install]. message i get is "base-code rom id structure not found". floppy is first boot device, followed by cdrom then hdd.

is there a setting in cmos or array creator i am missing?

This is caused by your computer trying to boot from LAN, but failing. I'd say that your boot disk is bad.

i have gotten to the bottom of this issue. after stumbling through the process of wiping my hdd's that are set up for RAID 0 i ran into a problem with my windows xp pro install disc. the message "base code id rom structure not found" seems to imply that the disk has gone bad (when good disks go bad, ooooo!) so hopefully you are not reading this because you have the same issue, but then again if you are it looks like you got to the bottom of it. end of thread.
