Geforce4 MX440 SE

Since I went form 98SE to XP I have been having problems with my computer screen going black and then coming back on and then going black again and then coming on. It can do this 10 times a day or more. I have a pentium III with a 450 MHZ and 640 MB of Ram. Next my video card is a nvidia geforce4 MX 440 SE. It is a AGP card and the driver for now is 56.72. I am running Norton Anti virus. I did check the bios and made sure the settings were right. I checked for conficts and there were none. I ran it in safe mode and took the card out and the dirivers and reinstalled it. I have checked all of the plugs and unless there is something internally in a connection I am at a lost for what this is. I am ready to go to an ATI video card but can not figure out why my geforce card worked when I was running 98 SE. One more thing when I set up XP my DSL server had me put on a firewall that came with XP. He did that because I did not have my anti virus on and I had gotten a virus. It was probably Worm Blaster. So anyway I download the patch for that thing. Also I have checked the event viewer nothing seems out of place there. I did not reformat as someone else had this problem and they reformatted and it did not solve it. I have talked with iomagic and they can not do anymore for me. I did not talk with Nividia. So if anyone can help me let me know. I even put my son in laws geforce4 MX44O SE in and it still did it. Of course it did not work in his machine either with XP and that is why he went to ATI. So if you can help me this is my last hope before I have to call someone in and spend the bucks to tell me something simple.

Janzy, I have never had luck with XP running good with anything under 1 GHz and sdram. Its slow, unresponsive and kind of ,,laggy. I used black vipers site and tweaked it as much as I could and it was just bleh...to me anyway.

I had it on my 1GHz tbird with 768 MB pc 133 and removed it within a month. It absolutely flies on another system I have with a 1.7 celeron and only 256MB pc2100.

I am hardly an expert though, just my 2 cents.

Does you motherboard have a 4x AGP slot? If so is the 4x enabled in the bios?

I had the same problem once, it made me so mad... I think the only way I got it fixed was to reinstall XP.

I realize that XP does not work well on a slow processor. I am just trying to get a couple of years out of what I have before I go to the big machine. Yes I do have a 4X AGP and it is enable. So I may try reinstalling XP but not formatting. Then I may switch cards. Now my neighbor has a 1GHZ and his geforce4 mx440 SE would not work right either. Open to any thing you can help me with. Thanks

why not stick with win98?
don't see any point in running XP on an old slow machine, though i would think all that ram would do pretty well.

by the way, i have a geforce mx440se PCI in mine (yes a pci card on an AGP 8x mobo lol) and it works fine on XP

GameManK the reason I switched to XP was because of memory leak and I was sick in tired of shutting the thing down three times a day. I think my machine runs well on what I have. I have another friend who runs XP on a 200 and something processor. Perhaps I will try a pci one. I have a friend that has an extra. Anything is worth trying. Thanks for the suggestion.
