Kids INTEL processors

do they really worth all that extra money?

currently going with asus deluxe-e, amd xp 2800, and hyperx mem. sticks, but when i thought i had it all figured out, 2 of my friends tell me that i really should be looking at intel pentium 4 3.0E GHz HT/800fsb 1MB cache ($221) as oppose to amd's ($113) with asus (P4S800D-E) mobo...they say that intel performs MUCH better (then amd) under heavy loads (and that's the reason why i'm building the computer, mostly for audio applications)...is it really ALL THAT MUCH better?

I don't think so. And most of the people you will ask here will say the same thing. The consensus is that AMDs are better for gaming and Intels are better for having a bunch of programs open. If you are concentrated on keeping some money, go with AMD. Best bang for the buck.

It's all about the $$
Personally I would get an Athlon XP2500+ and run it as a 3200+.
Oh... , actually that is what I did. The 2500+ chips run aboout $70.

I think its a matter of taste. I do prefer Intel processors over AMD ones. Why? Because I do think they are worth the extra cash you spend on them. Dont get me wrong, I do like AMD processors, and they are excellent (specially if you are on a budget) but I do think Intel's processors are superior.

Don't get the new Prescott's. I mean the Intel Pentium 4's with 1MB cache, because they arent as great as the Northwoods, and they get overheated. They dont have as much support as the Northwood's either. Get a nice Northwood instead, because those 512KB extra arent worth it.

If you're building for audio apps, it is definitely faster under the P4 /w HT and 800MHz FSB.

k, here's what i've found in the past few mins:

Intel Intel_Pentium_4_CPUs
Pentium 4 2.8Ghz 478/800Mhz 512K Cache (oem) ($170) with

ASUS SiS 655TX Chipset Motherboard for Intel Socket 478 CPU, Model "P4S800D-E Deluxe" ($100)

(really about $60 more then the amd combo i was looking at)...

so yes, i don't do graphic design, nor do i play the games...then intention is the audio apps, mainly...also what are some of the things to look out for as far as fitting goes?

I'm a long time Intel Fan, but AMD is just as good. A 2800+ doensn't run at 2.8 Ghz, but it does more work per clock cycle. Think of it as Intel having a 600 HP engine, but never uses all that power. AMD has a 400 HP engine, but its always using that energy. I would say that Intel is faster overall, but for audio apps, 2800+ is good, but maybe you could get a 3000+, my friend has one and its awesome all around.

Hope this helps!

personally, i'd stick with an AMD cpu and use the money saved ($60+) and spend it on a larger hard disk. you're gonna need a lot of storage if you're going to do audio stuff.

It's really not about the processors, as it is about the chipsets. I just like Intel chipsets. I don't find as much confusion in working with them.

i would be wary of that SiS chipset

i have it and i wouldnt trade it for anything
