i also recently put in a new graphics card (gf4 5900 128mb) will this reduce the cpu speed because it needs a power suply???

If you want to change it, you will have to go into bios and change the front side bus and/or the multiplier.

A graphics card wont affect the speed of your processor.

if you can would you go into the bios and tell us what the setting are currently set at and then i'm sure someone can help you step by step set everything up correctly....

shurly they would not put a slower cpu in and try to scam you would they?(they just might....and don't call me "shirlie" .. )...

but all the info you can give us will help a lot....otherwise we are just guessing......

what "factory"?...like dell or gateway ..ect...

what was the original problem?

what are the specs of your mach.?

remember we can't see what you see(duh... ..)so every little thing may help...tell us what you see!!!

Hi

Ok well its a time computer and the specs are :-

2600 athlon xp
1024 3200 ddr ram
gf4 5900 128mb
120 hd
windows xp

Ive had the cpu running at 2600 but i didnt make the change in bios
my friend did when i was away
so ive restored the pc and its went back to 1025 (tells u when u turn on machine and also in the control panel - systems first page)

i tried changing the cpu clock from 100mhz to 200mhz in the frequency option in bios but when restarting the pc the monitor wont turn on !?

bios has the following set up in frequency / voltage control

cpu fsb clock - 100 MHZ
CPU RATIO - AUTO
VCORE - AUTO
SPREAD SPECTRUM - +0.25%

the rest of the options r also on auto

THANKS
sorry if this does not help you i really am green when it comes to bios

I think the CPU ratio needs to be switched from AUTO to manual, or whatever the other one is.

Select optimal setting in the bios menu , save and exit , that should set everything back to normal .

WHAT mobo? We can tell you "exactly" what to set it too if you can tell us the mobo brand & model. If not-without you knwing a tid about bios's you may be intimidated specially how the last 3 guys told you 3 dif things. No offense guys-its all good info, just we dont wanna swamp him or her with info like that when already shy of bios.
