help, possible bad ram???
hello, i purchased a stick of crucial 256mb ddr 266 cl2.5 ecc for 40$ shipped from another forum, ok, here is prob, when i put it in, the system starts up then shuts off, then starts up and no screen or boot up. So, i put in the old ram again, 2 sticks of 128 mg ddr266 and it boots up fine. I even tried the one stick of 256 with 1 stick of 128 and same thing, comes on, shuts off, then comes on and nothing.. i think i got a bad stick of ram or i am doing something wrong?

Did you check to see if the new ram was compatible with your system specs? Did you make sure you were grouded BEFORE touching/handling the new ram?
ECC w/ Non-ECC = No Good

You stated the stick you just bought is ECC. You may need to enable ECC capability in the bios. Not sure if you can use it along with non-ECC ram. Anyone else know?

man this stinks... what is the difference with ecc and non-ecc and how would i know if the MB is compatible. I have installed numurous sticks of ram before and have never had problems.
i have tried the stick by itself and still same thing. when i put in my other 2 sticks and take out that stick, works fine?

ECC = error correcting something - usually used in servers and mission critical applications but can be used in many home use motherboards
non-ECC = regular, standard type ram
Your sdram or DDR comes in ECC or non-ECC. The ECC is slightly slower than non-ECC so is usually not selected for home use. Most boards as new as yours would run ECC. Check manual/ specs.
I did some research and it seems that some boards will allow ECC and non-ECC to be run together and some will not. YMMV

okay, my manuel says nothing about ecc and there is no bios setting for it. I tried it again on a fresh HD with win xp, still no luck, my other to sticks of ram run perfect, but this one by itself does not run, same problems, starts up, then shuts down, then starts up and no pic....no boot. Will a pc store test ram? How can i tell if it is good or bad? I left an e-mail with the person i bought it off of wanting a refund and i will ship it back to him, but i can see this turning into a big screw up on my end as i can't find his thread or what forum i was using at the time.. all i have is his e-mail... sucks...any help would be great!!!

Here is your answer: http://www.msi.com.tw/program/produc...il.php?UID=364
Short version is this:
Main Memory
• Supports two 184-pin DDR200/DDR266/DDR333 DIMMs
• Supports Max. memory size of 2GB
• No support ECC Function
Best way to test would be to put it in a different pc that supports ECC. Yours is not an uncommon mistake. I've seen many members here trying to sell ECC or buffered ram they bought by mistake.
