cant reinstall sound drivers presario 5070

I recently reinstalled windows 98 on a computer all drivers were reinstalled successfully except for the sound ess 1869 every time I try to reinstall ,the program downloads and when I execute it ,it gives me an illegal error and says it will shut down,or will say I have restrictions on the computer or cannot download to c:/windows/temp, or unable to download because of shared programs. Would this have anything to do with compaqs own support files as well as I left the system save drive when I reinstalled(drive d) In the temp folder I have things referring to cpq and other things. Please give feedback of any kind.

You may wish to consider wiping your entire HDD with a utility like www.killdisk.com (there are many for free out there, but this is a really good one). It will bring your HDD as close to "like new" as you can get. Simply formatting, IMAO, is not enough, as viruses and corrupt Win files are still able to be reinstalled at the next OS install. I just think now is a good time to wipe it, as there's no critical info on drive, and 98 SE is unstable enough without any help from me.

You can't get a copy of Win 2000 Pro from someone you know who has upgraded to XP???
