I have a similar problem to the one MitaDC has, just opposite...

I work at a community college that has 7 computer labs which I supervise. We have several jokers that like to set the screen resolution to 1600X1200 (on 16" - 17"monitors).
My boss's solution is to set the res to 800x600 and remove the settings tab through the gpedit.msc. Unfortunately, this prevents the graphic students from resetting to a higher resolution when using photoshop cs and dreamweaver.
I've searched through the gpedit and found only "Do not save settings at exit", under the User config -> admin templ -> desktop. This does nothing as far as I can see.
My next thought was a registry edit / hack. I've found several places to set the default x-axis resolution (and Y-axis). However when I change them to 800X600 it works great for the first reboot, but subsequent changes automatically change the values for these keys. I've changed the keys in both Local_Machine & Current_user to no avail.
I have found several programs that can do this for me, but with 300+ computers they would cost too much. I would prefer the solution to work "on Logoff", but "on Shutdown" would help. We are running Win XP Professional on all of the computers and set up a ghost image to clone entire rooms at a time.
We also use a "roaming profile" set up and I am sure that the resolution could be set that way. Unfortunately, I do not have control of that part of the network and the admin says it is not possible. He is pretty busy at this time getting ready for the summer upgrade to 2003 server, so I think he's blowing me off.
Thanks for any help you can provide,
Incog
