Problem with cd burner

A friend of mine got an older computer a while back and I gave him my old cd burner. His computer is a bit odd, it's a pentiumIII xenon 550mhz dual cpu and there has been several things about it that confuse me. Most recently is trying to install this burner. His CD-rom that is currently in there uses an IDE cable which is much larger (wider) than the type of cable i'm used to. But his hard drives (2 drives) use the correct size IDE cable and theres another two open slots on the motherboard for the right size. I hooked up the burner with the jumper on cable select with it's own cable and when I started it up it never said new hardware found, I haven't done much else to try make it work. Any suggestions on what to do? Thanks for the time

Did the drive show power? Did the light come on?

Sometimes it worth setting it as a Secondary slave (Force the issue) and check the BIOS to see if it shows up.

wow thanks for the quick replies.

I never checked bios, I didn't try much other than plug it in and turn it on.

Whats scsi?

Yes the drive powered up, not sure about the light

I think I'll try swapping around the jumper and checking bios =)

Would it be best to put it on the same cable as the two HD's? The current cable won't reach and the one I have doesn't have enough spaces on it. Would it be worth getting another cable?
