just set the first boot device to be the cdrom drive, place the xp cd in the drive and boot the system.
it will boot from the cd and you can then run a reinstall repaire of the hard drive without loosing any settings and data, except all the patches and updates and sp1 will need to be reinstalled.
For about 4-5 years now, newer computers have been bootable via CD-ROM drives... you don't need a boot disk with DOS CD-ROM drivers unless you've got a box that's pretty old. JUst go into BIOS, set your CD-ROM drive as first in boot order, put your XP install media in your CD-ROM drive and reboot.
