Network problem

Hi!

I made a network between a desktop and a laptop. Desktop has
Windows XP PRO and the laptop has Windows XP home.

When I open my network places on the desktop it only shows the
desktop computer. When I go to view workgroup computers it only
shows the desktop. I tried pinging the laptop and succeeded. My
network places on the laptop shows both computers and when I tried
accessing the desktop it gives me the following error message:
\\fashion-1 is not accessible. You might not have permission to use
this network resource. Contact the administrator of the server to
find out if you have access permissions.
The network path was not found.

When I tried pinging the desktop it did not go through.

workgroup is MSHOME Notebook name is NoteBook computer description
note book 1

desktop name is fashion-1computer description c-1

Thank`s

Manny

Do you have a firewall running on the desktop? If so, try turning it off.

Firewall in place on the desktop? WinXP default firewall will stop pings, I think. Turn the firewall off (or allow file sharing on the LAN). I'm not on XP ATM, but if you need help in sharing trhough the firewall just ask.

Cheers

Since this is a workgroup, ensure that you have created the same user account/same password on both PCs. Also, you should be prompted to enter a username when you first boot into Windows (i.e., login through Client for MS Networks), otherwise your networked PC doesn't "know" who you are when you try to access it, and will refuse to grant you access.

Also, have you "shared" the drive(s) or folders which you want to access? Try to map to \\fashion-1\c$ (this will map the entire C: drive)

If the firewall is off, and you can't ping, something is not set up right. Either one of your network adapters is configured incorrectly, or you have a hardware prob (like wrong cable - needs to be a crossover cable for direct connection between two PC's, not a straight through cable like you use to connect to a router or switch).

Try pinging in both directions again. Also, both PC's may have had firewall enabled, so check then both.

I'm assuming you do not have a router or switch in between the PC's. If you do, that could be an issue as well.

Cheers
Mick
