Word XP: Numbers diappearing

Hello all,

I am working with a large document (about 250 pages, with lots of graphics) in Word XP. I have a lot of numbered lists. In converting from one template to another, all of the numbers were reset -- they no longer start at 1 for each section, now they are all sequential. For example, I have this:

1.
2.
3.
SECTION HEADING
4.
5.

and I want this:

1.
2.
3.
SECTION HEADING
1.
2.

The problem is, when I right click the first numbered item in a section and click "Restart Numbering," all of the numbers disappear throughout the document. However, Word thinks they are still numbered, because the "Numbering" button on the toolbar is pressed in.

Anyone ever seen anything like this before? Anyone have an idea how I might be able to fix it?

Thanks,

crow

I just tried this in Word and found the following
I set up numbering and typed in three quick words at numbered lines 1, 2, and 3. Then I hit enter and typed in the "SECTION HEADING" and hit enter. I note there that the numberring was not automatic. However, I got it to do what you want by merely hand typing in the "1.[tab]text" and when I hit enter, the numbering was again automatic.

If I tried to use the RESTART NUMBERING, all subsequent numbers did not disappear, but were simply renumbered. I think the answer is in the hand entering of the needed "1.[tab]" as above.
