stupid compaq...display problems

here goes another compaq problem. just acquired a compaq presario 7478 pc, several years old....most likely 5 years. it has AMD k6 533MHz. i reformatted the drives, then i installed win 2k pro, which went fine. im using onboard video and sound. i tried to change the display settings (resolution and color) and i seem to be stuck with 16 colors and 2 resolution choices. went into device manager and "display" is not in the list. right-clicked on desktop for display settings and went to advanced then adapter and the adapter type is "VGA". i checked the properties of it and it is a VgaSave. went to resources and there is conflict in I/O ranges and memory ranges. i went to the compaq site to get display drivers but none worked. what should i do? thanks in advance.

i think you mite be stuck. do you have a vid card with drivers that you could try. those older compaqs are very picky and without the factory drivers for the motherboard( on the compaq restore cd) you mite have some dificult changing those settings

I wouldn't trust any drivers from DriverGuide.
They are ususally full of viruses.. worms.. trojans.. etc.

oh boy...i installed the driver and everything looked ok ...except now when im starting windows it wont start all the way. i did a virus scan on the zip file and after i unzipped it to a folder it showed up clean...then again i havent been able to update the deninitions. the cpu is now in a neverending reset loop. itll get right past the win 2k startup splash screen then ask for a diskcheck then a blue screen with something i cant read (flashes way too fast) flashes then restarts.
help...

canu boot from the cd and reinstall windows over the top of the current install..maybe that will straighten it backup. (or just format and re-install)

maybe it wasnt the best driver? Arent their drivers for it on compaqs site? (or just get a $10 vid card, lol)

35 pics later and no good shot of the screen so i sat there and tried to read it for about a half hour and got:
** STOP 0x00.......couldnt get the rest (memory address maybe?)
Beginning dump of physical memory
i guess im reinstalling windows again. if i can get my hands on a compaq recovery cd, then what? will the drivers be compatible with the 2k OS? and if i cant get the cd then am i just SOL?
