wireless network setup (newbie)

Ok. I have a wireless dell router with 4 ports. I connect a cord from my dsl to the 'internet' port on the router, and from there i run a cord from an LAN slot to my ethernet on my computer. I want to connect my laptop through this connection (in terms of wireless connection), but first i need to establish one. How do i go about establishing a connection with my wired computer? there seems to be a link connected from my dsl box to my router but i'm having trouble connecting. I hope you can understand what my problem is...

yep... check the documentation usually routers have a web interface, that can be accessed trought any web browser... like

http://192.168.1.1

First off all Wireless need a point to access (router), and its identified with a name and its called ESSID, this can be the default name of the router or any custom name you want like "My Home", you can change the ESSID accesing the interface I told you in the first paragraph.

On your wireless computer you can try to set up the connection usually on the tray, there is a small icon that looks like two monitors, right click and then click on View Avaiable Wireless Networks.... a window will appear and there will be the ESSID name click on it, and then click on the small box that says connect..... then your wireless device will get the information from the router and you are networked now.... enjoy....

If the icon I told you is not there go START ---> Settings ----> Control Panel ---> Network and interface connections, then network connections, right click wireless network connection..
Next step will be security.... but we can help you on that after you complete the steps above...

Welcome to Techimo....

i'm pretty sure i got the wireless configuration all figured out but now i need to connect my wired computer though my router. this is the major problem. usuallywhen i run it through just the dsl box i click my connection icon - my isp and security stuff pops up - i click connect, than vola, i'm connected. now when i run it through the router and the dsl box like its suppose to be done. all's it says it thats its connecting through the server. it never makes the connection.

once the computer is hooked to the router..you shouldnt need any software or anything to click on.....sounds like you installed some software when you first got it setup with the dsl modem.

try going to the dos prompt and typing in "ipconfig /release" and then "ipconfig /renew" without the quotes

see what you get.

otherwise you could run the connection wozard and tell it you are connecting thru a router

OR..you could call your isp and tell them you have a router and ask if they will help you get the computer online
