Slow Boot PC problem...
The specs of the PC are:
AMD 2600+ (2 ghz) CPU
MSI K7T Turbo 2 MB
512 MD SDRAM
Maxtor 40 GB 5400 HD
ATI 9200SE 128 DDR Video
LG CDRW
Windows XP (SP1 and all updates).
Generic (Cheap) 350 watt PS
Software loaded on the HD is limited to Office 03, Adobe PS and a few small apps. It has Ad-Aware Pro, Zone Alarm and Spy Bot installed. The HD has about 80% free space and does not need defragging.
PROBLEM:
When the PC boots it takes approximately 4 minutes to get to the desktop. The splash screen with the moving progress bar grinds for minutes with the HD activity light on constantly. When the machine is set to go the apps are quite responsive.
Any idea what the problem may be?
Thanks.

Well... you need to make sure that not a lot of programs are starting when Windows boots up.... I am assuming you know how to get rid of them. Also, maybe you should just format and reinstall windows..... |

Shabow.. its a pure clean install of Windows XP (using SP1 Pro CD). No other programs that what I have listed are installed.
Ran full ADware and Spybot.. and nothing found.. clean system.

I don't know.... your HD might be a little too slow because of the 5400 RPMs maybe try upgrading to a 7400RPM drive..?

Shabow.. that wouldn't make a difference in the boot up times.. maybe a couple seconds at best but not what I am experiencing.

dude, I was just about to go on techimo and start a new thread about this same problem. It happens to me randomly and I'm using XP Pro with all the updates, I can't pinpoint what is causing it, the hard drive light keeps on being lit for like 4 minutes during the boot screen where the little scroll bar keeps on scrolling I tried bootvis, but nothing, it didn't wanna work. I defragged like 30 times. I ran memcheck, I changed IDE cables, I have been trying to google and find something, but I can't. I even reinstalled XP. I bought a new PSU, nothing, nothing, nothing...it's horrible.
btw: link to my old thread about this: http://www.techimo.com/forum/showthr...hreadid=106688

wow, I just did that pre-fetch thingie removal thingie, and i'll say this, IF that was the cause, then I'm going to be quite happy now, the system boots in 20 secs after shutdown and in arounhd 15 after a reboot....but I don't know for sure whether THAT was the culprit, since the problem occured randomly for me, more often than not lately.
