your question is acually kinda unanswerable. in some areas it's more powerful than a 3.4 and in other's it's less powerful than a 2.8. generally it's considered around a 3.0 (if i remember right), hence the moniker. this is the entry level athlon64 afterall.

in all practicality, your CPU performs similar to a 3 Ghz CPU... like originel said, your CPU will perform better in some areas than a P4, and in others it will be beatin... so overal your CPU = a 3.0Ghz P4

There is a 2800+ version of the Athlon 64.

umm, i cant say any specific numbers or anything (get those at www.tomshardware.com ) but typically AMDs are a little bit quicker in gaming, while pentiums are faster in decoding/encoding etc

i stand corrected. when did that come out anyways? guess i've got some reading to do

in general P4's are better at multi-threading whereas XP/64's are better at single threaded speed, so anything which takes use of multi-threading and the like (such as encoding mentioned by terk) is better on a P4 and anything single threaded (like gaming) is better on a 64. these are generalizations with some over-simplification, but you get the picture.

UNLESS your running duel cpu. As p4 offers none. The HT will trip stumble and fall compaired to a duel A64 cpu multi-tasking enviroment.

As said, your processor performs about on par with a P4 3.0... The Athlon64 3200+ would be abotu on par with a 3.2, etc etc...

Your cpu will out perform a 3.0C in stuff such as gaming and file compression. The 3.0C will get you in video and audio encoding.

"The 3.0C will get you in video and audio encoding."

by a little. Its not a huge diff. THe A64 does have sse2 after all. Only HT stands between them in encoding. And thats a little one sided there. Would be like compairing the P4 to a duel 64 system encoding. I know who looses then. Or if the 64 was running in 64bit and on a 64bit os with a 64bit optimised encoder. Then I think it would clearly have = ground. I mean after all what did you turn off on the P4 when benching the encoding times? SO you need the a64 runnign at its fullest capability first-or its not even really compairing them. One is still in its jogging mode(a64)and not full running. All in all. They are so close when one or the other DOES loose. ITs almost negligable.
